ART & Changemaking is the fifth event in a six-part speaker series (ART &), part of Urban Gateways’ 60th Anniversary celebration in 2021.
Through the ART & Speaker Series, Urban Gateways invites our supporters and community members to explore connections between the arts and a variety of timely and thought-provoking topics. Presented in a virtual speaker series format, ART & events feature creative and insightful contributors including artists, arts and community leaders, art enthusiasts, and more.
The ART & series is free to the public, although a $19.61 ticket donation per event is suggested for those who are able to contribute (in honor of Urban Gateways’ founding year, 1961).
ART & events will also be made available as recordings for on-demand viewing.

ART & Changemaking youth speakers & artists:
Kennedy Jordan Turner
Kennedy Jordan Turner is a 12-year-old author, illustrator, dancer, and student. Kennedy is the co-author and illustrator of Little Black Pearls for Little Black Girls. She is working to build self-confidence in young black girls everywhere, and has been recognized by Fortune 500 companies like Fifth Third Bank. Little Black Pearls for Little Black Girls is meant to inspire pride and confidence in girls who will be tomorrow’s leaders.
Diego Lucero
Diego is a visual and musical artist and the oldest of 7 kids. Diego plays the guitar, bass, and piano. He has released multiple songs on Spotify and plays rock music with his band Demolition Dreams. He has performed all over the US, been on Nickelodeon, and performed for the Chicago Bulls with his family mariachi band Cielito Lindo. His work often contains themes of surrealism, introspection, and emotions. Diego has worked with Northwestern University’s TIDAL Lab on TunePad, a website that is designed to teach both computer science and music concepts using Python. He has also worked with Urban Gateways through the Teen Arts Pass program, which helps make amazing artistic experiences accessible to Chicago teens. He won Chicago’s Rising Star artist award in 2020, which he was nominated for by Urban Gateways.
Karol Skoczen
Karolina (Karol) Skoczen is a Polish-born first generation immigrant living in Chicago and studying Psychology at DePaul University with a minor in Music Recording. As an aspiring childhood and developmental psychologist, her main demographic of interest is youth, hence her previous participation in programs such as Teen Arts Pass (former member of TAP Teen Council) and the Cities Mentor Project. Having always been involved in the arts, Karol plays bass and makes visuals for a local punk band named Divisor and continues to engage with the the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) music scene in Chicago. She hopes to open up space for more youth engagement and voices in the arts and believes creative expression should be available to everyone.
