Breaking News: Massive Outbreak in Smiles at Nixon Elementary Final Performance
By Jamie Kostecki
Still have a “Case of the Mondays” on a Tuesday? Looking to turn that frown upside-down? Well, I have the perfect solution, let me tell you!
Teaching artist Kimberly Schomburg recently held a dance residency with Nixon Elementary School, and it was a raging success. Kimberly divided the youngsters into three groups and focused on a different style of dance with each: 5th and 6th graders (hip hop), 3rd and 4th graders (jazz), and 1st and 2nd graders (musical theater).
Almost all of the kids were super excited to dance after a couple of weeks of dance icebreakers and rhythm games. They learned jazz walks, pivot turns, chassés, pas de bourrées, and kick ball changes—pretty intense stuff. But thanks to Kimberly’s talent and patience, they all excelled.
Not smiling yet? Well, below is the link of the 1st and 2nd graders’ final performance at the culminating event. I dare you to watch it and not smile. No, I TRIPLE-DOG-DARE you!
