Students at Mt. Vernon Elementary School definitely have some literary chops – and what better way to show them off than through a compilation poetry book? Created with the help of teaching artist Rachel Javellana, the book (aptly titled “I Am the Star of My Life”) was comprised of pieces by 7th and 8th grade students written during an after-school writing program. Under Rachel’s guidance, students expressed their thoughts on their communities, governments, and personal lives through the written word; they also learned to listen to and share ideas with their peers in a constructive workshop setting.
