ART & Resistance is the third event in a six-part speaker series (ART &), part of Urban Gateways’ 60th Anniversary celebration in 2021.
Through the ART & Speaker Series, Urban Gateways invites our supporters and community members to explore connections between the arts and a variety of timely and thought-provoking topics. Presented in a virtual speaker series format, ART & events feature creative and insightful contributors including artists, arts and community leaders, art enthusiasts, and more.
The ART & series is free to the public, although a $19.61 ticket donation is suggested for those who are able to contribute (in honor of Urban Gateways’ founding year, 1961).
ART & events will also be made available as recordings for on-demand viewing.

ART & Resistance featured speakers & artists:
Mashaun Ali Hendricks
Mashaun Ali Hendricks is a restorative justice-based visual artist and the owner of TRAP House Chicago, a restorative justice-based streetwear boutique on the southside of Chicago. Mashaun has been a practitioner and trainer in restorative justice for the last 10 years. He has worked districtwide with Chicago Public Schools to transform classroom management and discipline practices to reduce the number of suspensions, expulsions, and in-school arrests. He has also worked with the Chicago Police Department to train community engagement officers in circle keeping. Most recently, he has served as the restorative justice consultant for Cook County Restorative Justice Community Court in North Lawndale. As a visual artist, Mashaun has shown his art at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the School of the Art Institute, 6018 North, and many more.
Sharon Mason
Currently Ms. Sharon Mason is the music teacher and arts liaison at Benjamin E. Mays Academy in Chicago. During her career she has taught grades 3-8 in a variety of subjects including core academic subjects along with instrumental music, choirs, and handbell choirs; at the high school level she has been a principal and assistant principal as well as teaching instrumental music. She is on the Board of Directors at the Beverly Theatre Guild and serves as music director for many of their musicals; she is also the music director at Ashburn Lutheran Church. Ms. Mason was the recipient of the Good News Excellence in Teaching Award for high school from the Chicagoland Lutheran Education Foundation. At Mays she has partnered with Urban Gateways on arts programs for the past seven years. She believes that “The arts are not a luxury. The arts are a response to our individuality, help to shape our identity and lift us up.”
Cierra Monay
Cierra Monay is a newer name to Chicago radio, but her love for music has existed since she was a little girl. From hearing her favorite songs on the radio and recording them to a cassette tape, she has literally watched radio evolve. While in school she landed an internship at a well known radio station, interning for a radio personality who had the #1 Urban radio show in Chicago. Her connections with the people at the station eventually led to a job at Power 92. Six years in, and Cierra has moved her way up the ladder from a street team member to a board operator, producer, and now a radio personality. You can catch Cierra Monay on the airwaves each Saturday, 2-6pm.
Diana Solís
Diana Solís is a Chicago based artist born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. Her artistic practice encompasses a range of media and techniques including illustration, printmaking, photography, found object sculpture, public murals and installation – often examining notions of place, identity, and belonging. Solís holds a BFA in photography from the University of Illinois at Chicago; she has exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally, including at the National Museum of Mexican Art (where her work is part of the permanent collection) and the DePaul Art Museum here in Chicago. Solís is a Teaching Artist for Changing Worlds, the National Museum of Mexican Art’s CASA Program, and Urban Gateways in community-based art programs and Chicago Public Schools residency programs.
